Cafe Papillon

Now I have butterflies... in the stomach.
Imagine catching up on your Marin IJ reading to find the restaurant you just reviewed (Cafe Papillon) had closed! The story is wrong in one respect -- it did not close in 2007 since I was there for breakfast a few days ago... but I did a drive-by at lunch yesterday, and found, indeed it is very closed. The story reported that a new place will open there in spring, World Coffee Cafe.

Bobby's Cafe

The good news is that the delicious Bobby's F'o'c's'le Cafe, is coming back to San Rafael in a different location and becoming Bobby's Cafe. It will be open for breakfast, lunch & dinner soon after Super Bowl is over. It is on 4th street without the water (at least until the next rain - ha!), but with breakfasts as good as theirs, it shouldn't make a difference. I took a photo of their new location at lunch yesterday.

Barney's Gourmet Hamburgers

Vegetarian menu takes up real estate! I was in a hurry for lunch the other day, and thought Barney's Gourmet Hamburgers may somehow have ONE veggie burger choice, and I was pleasantly surprised to see a whole section of interesting ones.

Half order of steak fries

But first I ordered a half order of steak fries, and that was one big half! The fries came piping hot and were fried in 100% rice bran oil. These were nicely flavored.

North Beach Garden

I ventured on for the North Beach Garden, which was smothered in mushrooms, artichokes and cheese. It was too big to get my mouth around, but I enjoyed it throughly. I am delighted that there is a burger place to go with my more carnivorous friends that gives me a large choice of interesting options. The staff was friendly and prompt too.

Cafe Papillon

Butterflies.
When I found out that Cafe Papillon serves breakfast every day, it immediately went on my must try list. Dad and I dropped by what was I believe the last sunny Sunday in Marin for some time. The staff was friendly and welcoming, and we were obviously earlier than most of their Sunday crowd since we were the only ones in the restaurant until the clock struck 10 a.m.

Ham & Cheese Omelet

Dad wanted just a standard ham & cheese omelet with hash browns and wheat toast. He said it tasted just as he hoped.

White Chocolate Latte

While Dad ordered his standard hot chocolate (and enjoyed it), I decided to be a bit more adventurous, and tried the White Chocolate Latte (pictured). Good choice! Wow, that one is recommendable, but be prepared for its sweetness.

Spinach, Mushroom & Cheese Omelet

Personally, since this restaurant has a Persian flair, I was hoping to find something with that flair on the breakfast menu. No such luck. I tried the spinach, mushroom and cheese omelet with the freshly made hash browns. I was disappointed that the cheese was only the processed pre-sliced type placed on top of the omelet, when it would have been so easy to add some interest to the dish by putting some feta or another white cheese inside. But it was quite fresh, and tasted good, other than the oily processed cheese. The place was cheerful and clean, but the empty shelving could have used a bit more spiffy brightening as it made the place look rather unfinished the way it was. All in all a solid 'American' breakfast.

Weekend Herb Blogging #117. Another week of blogging about any herb, plant, vegetable, or flower! This week there is a little extra anticipation going round since I am hoping this post will be a record buster -- and there's a prize for someone at the end of the day! Personally, I am fond of colors, so I'm going to organize this post by color! I wonder what the 'in' colors are this week? I'm also going to number the entries to make it easier to tally scores.

I wrote the first paragraph as I was starting to write the summaries, and now on a rainy Sunday afternoon can tell you that "green" is the hands-down favorite this week... and we didn't break the record, but had a good show of 31 32 posts! But that's all the better for the chances of those here to win the prize. After posting this I will attend to prepping and drawing for the food-related book, all to be revealed tomorrow!
