Jennie Low's, Mill Valley

Good value Chinese. Jennie Low's is a well-known name in Marin for healthy and simple Chinese fare. The stores are clean and spare and the fare is not fancy, but good, predictable, and reasonably priced. You can get a good meal for less than $10. I stopped by for a quick lunch in their downtown Mill Valley location.

Hot and Sour Soup

Everything starts with the soup of the day, in this case, hot and sour.

Dim Sum Plate

I sampled their dim sum plate, one of the most 'expensive' choices at $7.98 for the meal. And yes, I couldn't finish it. That BBQ pork bun is humongous! Have you noticed the gorgeous blossoms out and the riot of spring flowers, dare I hope our good weather is here to stay?

The paper the other day cited that Chinese food was bad food. How can something so delicious be so very bad (I know, I know). Anyway, it would be hard for me to give up on something so delicious as hot and sour soup. A nice hot bowl would be so scrumptous for breakfast this morning.

I read in the Marin IJ that the Jennie Low's in MV was going to close, due to issues with the landlord. Is that still the case?

Bob: It all depends on how it's cooked -- Jennie made efforts to make it healthier than what is usually found out there. Ask for no oil, and don't order the deep fried things and its pretty healthy. The typical American-Chinese fare is pretty fat-heavy.

Cindy: I called the Mill Valley location, and confirmed that they are closing in July, thanks for the tip. The Novato restaurant will continue to be open, and they are opening a Petaluma branch as well. The person I spoke with couldn't confirm the reason.
