Comfort for all

Last night since Dad was with his companion and I was feeling stir crazy, I thought I'd go to a new place for a blogging dinner. I'd heard some good buzz about Yacachubis on 4th Street in San Rafael, so headed there. Oops, not open and nary a sign... hmm.. I hope that means only closed on Tuesdays. Ok, I'll take some of Umi Sushi's awesome handmade udon. Oops, they are still on vacation. I passed by House of Lee since I'd just had Chinese for lunch. Oh, what about the Taste of Rome San Rafael location? Oh this doesn't look good, should be open but not only is it very closed, all the signage has been taken down and tucked inside. I think they are CLOSED. Feeling discouraged, I thought I just needed some simple yet good comfort food. And Barney's Gourmet Hamburgers was open!

Wow, I remembered they had a good selection of vegetarian burgers, but there was a whole other section on the menu for vegetarians as well. I ordered my sandwich out of this section, and noticed that they not only had half orders of their fries, but single orders too so I ordered that as well. These perfectly cooked steak fries came first. Even the smallest order was more than I could eat! It was a good thing these came early as they were so hot, so there was a chance for these to cool enough to eat by the time my sandwich came.

Then my Barney's Falafel Sandwich came. Not only were the pita halves stuffed with six falafel patties, but also lettuce, cucumber, tomato, avocado and feta cheese. There was a smooth and tasty tahini sauce on the side. The cool items were crisp and perfect and the falafels tasty too. This was a great sandwich!

I have to say I'm saddened by the number of closures I'm finding in Marin. Yes, some were marginal but others were great places to eat. I know a lot of people are having to cut back these days, but there are some ways to support our restaurants and not bust the budget. I receive plenty of fliers with coupons, and I'm sure these are going to other households in Marin too.
