Schroeder's expands hours

Larkspur resident Andrew Chun and Jan Wing of Kentfield recently re-opened Schroeder's near the Embarcadero Center in San Francisco.  The managing partners remodeled the interior, keeping historical highlights and keeping the comfortable feeling that has prevailed in its last 120 years.  Schroeder's reopened with dinner service in May, and is now open for lunch as well. It's updated hours are:

Monday Friday: 11:30am 10:00pm (Saturday/Sunday closed)

·      Lunch: 11:30am - 2:00pm
·      Dinner: 5:00pm - 10:00pm

The Lunch menu is here. And the Duck Pastrami Salad (cabbage, rye croutons, mustard vinaigrette, avocado) $15, and Chicken Schnitzel Sandwich (liver, cabbage, pickles, mustard) $14 are having me want to hop in the car and have a taste.

Carnivores Delight!

Roast Haus

Dad and I were near Northgate in San Rafael and thought it was time to try Roast Haus. The minute you open the door you see big roasted carcasses of various meats, and a lovely roast meat smell. There are a variety of things that can be ordered in addition to the roast meat plates.

Tuna Sandwich

There were no roast fish dishes, so I opted for a standard tuna sandwich on a sourdough roll. Everything was fresh, it was fine, but there was nothing special about it.

Corned Beef 'petite' plate

Dad ordered a Petit plate, which consist of your choice of meat and two sides. Dad chose the Corned Beef with mashed potatoes and mixed vegetables. It totally looked like something his German step-mother would have made, and many a dinner I had at her and Grandpa's home growing up. He must of liked it as he polished it all off. I myself wondered what a regular plate would be like as this one was far from petit in portion. It also came with a roll and butter.

The service was in cafeteria style so there is not much to comment on other than the line servers and cashier were very friendly. As a pesca-tarian it would be hard for me to visit often as the ONLY choices that weren't meat were tuna sandwich and tuna salad from what I could see. But I will have to come back for my Dad's sake as this is the kind of food he grew up on and I never cook.

Slipped out

Roast Haus closed

I don't visit Novato so often, so the fact that Roast Haus Hof Brau closed slipped by as it slipped out a few months ago. Sam's Place opened in this location in late 2008, serving breakfast, lunch and dinner, with early good reports.

Roast Haus - Hof Brau

German Food, Fast.
After a few days of Marin, have your out-of-town relatives ever started making cracks about wheatgrass snorting, or left their nasturtium and green garlic salad untouched? Or more telling, upon hearing of the glut of non-native deer at Pt. Reyes developed a certain eye-twitch and volunteered to help out by bringing some 'fresh' meat to the table? These are obvious MAPE (meat and potato eaters) withdrawal syndrome signs. Outsiders need time to get accustomed to our flora and grass imbibing ways, and may need a quick MAP infusion. Luckily, I have found the perfect place to take relatives suffering from MAPE withdrawals before it's too late.

Unapologetically carnivorous, the first thing that hits your senses upon opening the door to the Roast Haus - Hof Brau, is the smell of freshly roasted meats of all kinds, but especially red. There is a kind of cafeteria line, beginning with the meat section, where friendly young men are awaiting right by the door with gorgeously roasted meats and big carving knives ready to take care of you and your relatives with all haste - no not THAT kind of 'take care of' - but with a MAP infusion. (Yes, those big carving knives ARE a bit spooky). Standing at the head of the line, if you look immediately to your left and straight up you'll see a boar's head mounted mouth-open and tusks sharp on the wall above. Your relatives already look better, they are just not quite ready for the usual Marin lifestyle.

French dip

Not feeling like big hunks of meat, after all I've been living in Marin nearly 10 years, I chose to go with the French Dip sandwich for dinner. I was the only person at around 6:15 p.m. in the restaurant, and got some friendly attention from someone who was supposed to be retired, Otto. He greeted me so charmingly, in an old world polite way - with an accent, and quizzed me on the method that the young men used to carve my meat. He seemed to want to be sure that they used proper technique on the correct piece of meat, and he was satisfied with my description, and that I was enjoying the sandwich. Yes, although I'm not a big MAP eater, I did enjoy the lean and succulent meat encased in crusty French bread and the salty au jus which was given in generous portion. Don't expect fancy here, just robust well-flavored simple fare, in well-worn surroundings. They also open at 8 a.m. for breakfast!
